What size should your website be? Full screen? Fixed width? What's the difference?
This website is fixed to 900 pixels wide? But why?
The simple answer is that it is large enough to display what we want to whilst fitting on most monitors.
Over the past few years monitors have changed significantly. Our statistics (gathered from many many websites we host) show that the days of the 15inch CRT screen are all but over and most screen sizes are 1024 pixels wide by 768 high, typically 17 inch flat screen or 15inch laptop size.
With technology moving on, quality improves and the number of pixels increases. So what size should we make your website?
When everyone had 15 inch screens with 800 x 600 as the size websites were built to either 750 or 760 pixels wide - allowing for the vertical scroll bar. Having a vertical scroll bar is acceptable but a horizontal one is quite frankly, ugly!
So with most screen sizes now over 1000 pixels wide why have we built this website and many others 900 wide? Well, to be honest it looks quite nice having a background, especially if the pages are centered on the screen.
So why not make the website fit the screen? Easy! You dont know how big someones monitor is going to be* and if someone has a large screen 1920 x 1200 pixels your site will be stretched out of proportion and could look awful, and first impressions count. A second reason is that most entry level website clients dont have masses of content, and there would be a lot of empty space on the page!
